... e adesso anche la mamma e' ammalata ...

e ha anche perso la voce. (Quindi niente Skype per un po')

From our own correspondent

Two more pictures of the Choroonu, captured by uncle Viju.

Our friends Emiliano and Ilaria came to see us in Chennai at the beginning of January. They took some nice pictures, so I asked to borrow a few of the Rajiv-centered ones for the blog.

The first two pictures are from our lunch at the Taj on one of the first days of the visit. It was awesome in every respect: not only the food was excellent, but the floor was carpeted and clean and the restaurant not very crowded, so we could put Rajiv on the floor to crawl happily while enjoying our food. Normally when we go out to eat we need to take turns so that somebody is always with Rajiv, so this was a nice change for once. (In the second picture I am not posing for a Coca Cola ad, I am tryng to get our little one to look up at smile attracting his attention with one of his favorite shining objects. Not so effective in this case, as you can see.)

The next pictures are from our trip to Pondicherry, in the last days of the visit.

Here we were walking near the beach at night. Little one is in the carrier and we are both wrapped up in the trusted Lufthansa blanket to protect him from the wind.

Here instead we were shopping, the main activity of the trip!

Qui invece si faceva shopping!

And after coming back from Pondicherry, here is Ilaria about to hit Rajiv with a big red hammer playing a bit with Rajiv before going to the airport.

Lots of Christmas pictures

Here is the rest of the pictures from the trip to Calicut almost one month ago. Not all the pictures, but a lot of them. Unfortunately not everybody is there, please believe that it was not intentional, it just shows that I am not a good photo-reporter. Enjoy! (By the way, it would be really nice if other people who took pictures wanted to share their best shots with us, either by emailing them to me or by uploading them somewhere and giving the link.)

Getting there!

Grandi progressi!

Rajiv has managed to stand alone for the first time. He was supporting himself with one hand on the couch and suddenly he decided he needed to hold his toy with both hand, so he let go. We panicked for a moment, but he didn't seem to have any problems and after a couple of seconds he just put his hand back on the couch. I hope it doesn't sound like a small achievement, because I think it's awesome!

Happy eight months!

Ritratto di un bimbo di otto mesi...

A bit doubtful, but why not...

S. claims Rajiv said "mamma" in his sleep. Uhm... Anyway, at the very least it shows that he is able to pronounce the elusive "M" sound. Stay tuned!

I am very much behind with my planned posts. With the trip to Calicut for Christmas and the visit of our friends Emiliano and Ilaria there has not been much time for blogging. Now life is back to normal, meaning we are back online, and it is time to catch up with the backlog of pictures accumulated in these weeks.

I will start with the pictures of the Choroonu, from our trip to Calicut. For those who might not know, the Choroonu is the ritual first feeding for a baby. The baby sits on his dad's lap and is given a little bit of rice with honey and ghee. (Honey in principle should not be given to small babies, I didn't know it was going to be part of the meal. I don't think he really ingested any though.)

I don't have pictures of the feeding itself, because I was trying to take a disastrous video, but I thought I would share a few cute pictures of little one crawling happily in the temple and playing with his cousin Jaydev. Little one really loved the large open space and the marble floor. Unfortunately he wasn't so happy during the feeding later on: he actually cried for the whole duration of it and spat every single grain of rice, for several minutes after it was all over. Still, it is the idea that matters I suppose.

Latest accomplishments

Gli ultimi progressi del piccolino:
  • Earlier he knew how to get up to stand holding on to something, but he didn't know how to get back down on the floor - except by falling, of course. Fortunately recently he has developed a technique to lower himself down on the floor safely: he bends his knees very slowly and moves a hand towards the floor as if to pick up something, looking down, and he only lets go of his support with the other hand when he is sitting or on his knees. It seems quite refined, we are very impressed.

  • He can stand holding on to something with only one hand. At the restaurant a few days ago he was standing holding on to the table cloth with one hand and waving the other hand around.

  • He can "cruise", i.e. walk sideways while holding on to something.

  • He has a new consonant: he said "PAPAPA" a couple of times.

  • He has a new form of communication: high pitched screams to express joy or irritation/impatience. No mistake is possible between the two kinds, just in case you were wondering...

Happy 2008 everybody!

It seems appropriate to start the new year with this picture (Shalini's idea) of the new generation - plus some of the old, but that could not be helped...

Happy new year!

Buon anno a tutti!
